The Washington Area Women’s Foundation builds stronger families and communities within the Washington region by investing strategically in non-profits serving women and girls in need. They make economic security a reality for thousands of women and girls each year by investing in programs for job training, girls’ empowerment and education, financial literacy and heath and safety.

Having escaped ethnic discrimination in her native country of Burundi, and then starvation and war as a refugee in the Congo, Beatrice sought a brighter future for her children in the United States. But life was still hard in America. So Beatrice turned to Training Futures to give her the hope and skills she needed to create a better life for her family.

Evelin came to the U.S. from El Salvador when she was 16 years old. She faced many obstacles in high school, especially the language barrier. The Tenants and Workers United youth program gave her the strength she needed to succeed.

Linda Butler

Linda was born to drug-addicted parents that neglected her and her sisters. She later found herself alone with children of her own, working a dead-end job and never getting the break she needed. At the age of 49, her break finally came when she heard about the Training Futures program of the Northern Virginia Family Service.

This video introduces Laceiy Paey, a single mom who has lived for 15 years on public assistance. Then she joined the Washington Area Women in the Trades program, funded in part by the Women’s Foundation, where she was trained to work in the field of construction. It was a move that transformed her life.
